How to Design a Garden

If you want to start a new garden you might have something very elaborate in mind but ask anyone who knows something about gardening and you will be told that the best way is to start small.

Start small by choosing a good site depending upon the area where you are located.

The choice of site depends upon what you want to grow. For growing vegetables you need to choose a site that gets at least six hours of sun exposure every day. The same site will do for flowering plants as well but there are many that grow well in a partially shaded site.

It is also important to see when the sun hits the site. Morning sunlight is less hot and less drying than the afternoon sun. Moreover, many flowers turn their face towards the sun and you will have to take that into consideration if your view of the garden is from the west window. There are still some perennial non-flowering plants that will grow in shaded sites but the choice is limited.

Now pay attention to the soil, which is the most important component of gardening. Fertility and texture are two important factors that determine the quality of soil. You can get the soil checked. The quality of the soil can be improved by adding organic matter, which will improve both fertility and texture.

Now, prepare a bed. It is better that you remove existing grass and weeds from the site where you want the bed to be. Take a sharp flat-edged spade and slice out the sod but make sure that you do not take along good top soil.

The best part starts now; choosing what you will grow. Since you are starting small, your choice may be limited to a handful of plants. If you have decided on growing vegetables, it would be best if you start with what you like to eat. Take a round of nurseries and other garden centers. Choose what appeals to you making sure that all have the same growing requirements, soil pH, sun and water.
